cautions on chemical peels

The following patients should not have chemical peeling:

  • Pregnant or lactating
  • History of heart problems
  • History of medical problems such as eczema, lupus, seborrhoea, rosacea, psoriasis, psoriasis, bacterial skin infections, extremely sensitive or hyper allergic skin
  • History of fever blisters or herpes simplex
  • Have used Accutane within the last year
  • Have used Retin-A within the last 3 months
  • Botox or Filler injections on the last 7 days

It is important to realize that you have taken off the outermost layer of the skin, which is also its protection, so this is not the time to go to the beach. Be careful with your skin a few days after the chemical peel treatment:

  • avoid heat; i.e. sauna , long hot shower
  • don't do vigorous exercise
  • don't expose your skin to the sun
  • don't expose yourself to chemicals such as swimming pools or tanning beds
  • wear a hat to protect your face from the sun
  • wear sunscreen lotion, SPF 60 or higher

what is a chemical peel?

Every day human skin undergoes the normal process of sloughing older dead skin cells. In their place newer cells have traveled up through the layers of skin. Chemical Peels accelerate this process by causing the destruction of damaged skin cells.

what is glycolic acid?

Glycolic acid is a Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHAs) used in skin treatments and can help with many conditions including oily and acne-prone skin, sun damage, dryness and hyperpigmentation.

After cleaning the skin, glycolic acid is applied and has to stay for up to 10 minutes, at which point a neutralizer solution is applied and leave on the face for up to 5 minutes. Then the face will be rinsed to remove the neutralized glycolic acid.

It takes about 30-45 minutes and there's no down-time for the skin to recover. That's why

it's also sometimes called a "lunchtime peel."
